Las heces con olor fétido usualmente están asociadas con la dieta, pero pueden ser un indicio de una condición médica.

Las heces suelen tener un olor desagradable, pero bastante común. Las heces que tienen un olor fuera de lo común o extremadamente desagradable pueden estar asociadas con ciertas condiciones médicas. Estas heces con olor fétido también tienen causas normales; la dieta la más notoria de estas causas.
Las heces con olor fétido pueden presentarse en combinación con heces flotantes .

- Fibrosis quÃstica
- EnteropatÃa inducida por gluten ( esprúe , enfermedad celÃaca)
- Malabsorción
- Esteatorrea idiopática (heces grasas sin causa conocida)
- Deficiencia de disacaridasa (cantidades insuficientes de las enzimas para la digestión de azúcares)
- SÃndrome del intestino corto
- Enfermedad de Crohn
- Colitis ulcerativa
- Colitis infecciosa (infecciones del colon)
