El dolor en la pierna puede deberse a un calambre en los músculos (también llamado calambres musculares) cuyas causas comunes son, entre otras:

  • Deshidratación o cantidades bajas de potasio, sodio, calcio o magnesio en la sangre
  • Medicamentos tales como:
    • diuréticos, que pueden hacer que la persona pierda demasiados líquidos o minerales
    • estatinas, que bajan el colesterol y pueden causar lesión muscular
  • Fatiga o distensión muscular por sobrecarga, ejercicio excesivo o por el hecho de mantener un músculo en la misma posición durante un período prolongado

Otras causas comunes de dolor en la pierna son:

  • Ateroesclerosis que obstruye el flujo de sangre a las arterias. Este tipo de dolor llamado claudicación se siente generalmente al hacer ejercicio o caminar y se alivia con el descanso
  • Coágulos de sangre (trombosis venosa profunda) debido al reposo prolongado en la cama
  • Infección del hueso (osteomielitis) o de la piel y el tejido blando (celulitis).
  • Inflamación de las articulaciones de la pierna por artritis o gota
  • Daño al nervio: común en diabéticos, fumadores y alcohólicos (los síntomas abarcan adormecimiento, hormigueo o sensación de pinchazos con agujas)
  • Venas varicosas

Las causa menos comunes son, entre otras:

  • Tumores o quistes benignos del fémur o la tibia (ostioma osteoide)
  • Medicamentos como alopurinol y corticosteroides
  • Enfermedad de Legg-Calve-Perthes: flujo sanguíneo deficiente a la cadera que puede detener o disminuir el crecimiento normal de la pierna
  • Tumores óseos malignos (osteosarcoma, sarcoma de Ewing).
  • Dolor del nervio ciático (que se irradia bajando por la pierna) causado por un disco intervertebral luxado en la espalda
  • Deslizamiento de la epífisis capital femoral que se observa generalmente en chicos y niños con sobrepeso entre 11 y 15 años de edad
