El médico examinará al paciente y hará preguntas como las siguientes: 

• ¿Cuándo detectó la llenura o protuberancia en el abdomen?
• ¿Qué tanto ha cambiado o se ha agrandado el hígado?
• ¿Qué otros síntomas están presentes?
• ¿Hay algún dolor abdominal ?
• ¿Se presenta la piel de color amarillo ( ictericia )?
• ¿Hay vómito?
• ¿Se presentan las heces de un color inusual o son  heces pálidas ?
• ¿Ha tenido alguna fiebre?
• ¿Qué medicamentos está tomando?
• ¿Qué cantidad de alcohol consume?

Los exámenes de diagnóstico para determinar la causa de la hepatomegalia varían dependiendo de la posible causa, pero algunos de ellos son:

• Radiografía abdominal
• Ultrasonido del hígado
• TC del abdomen
• Pruebas de la función hepática , incluyendo perfiles de coagulación sanguínea
• Otros exámenes para detectar posibles causas
