Si la fontanela retorna a la apariencia normal cuando el niño está tranquilo y con la cabeza erguida, no se trata en verdad de una fontanela abultada.

Cuándo contactar a un profesional médico:

La atención urgente e inmediata es necesaria para cualquier bebé que tenga una fontanela que verdaderamente esté protuyendo, en especial si está acompañada de fiebre o somnolencia excesiva.

Lo que se puede esperar en el consultorio médico:

El médico llevará a cabo un examen físico y hará preguntas acerca de la historia clínica del niño, tales como:

  • ¿El "punto blando" retorna a su apariencia normal cuando el bebé está tranquilo o con la cabeza erguida?
  • ¿La fontanela se presenta siempre abultada o esto aparece y desaparece?
  • ¿Cuándo notó esto por primera vez?
  • ¿Qué fontanela está abultada o protruye (la de la parte superior de la cabeza, la posterior u otra)?
  • ¿La protrusión se presenta en todas las fontanelas?
  • ¿Qué otros síntomas se presentan (como fiebre, irritabilidad, letargo)?
