Córnea opaca

Definición:

Es la pérdida de transparencia de la córnea.

Opacidad de la córnea; edema corneal

Consideraciones generales:

La córnea es normalmente una estructura transparente, casi invisible, que cubre el iris del ojo y sus dos funciones son transmitir y refractar la luz que entra al ojo. Ciertas enfermedades metabólicas, trauma, enfermedades infecciosas, deficiencias nutricionales y situaciones del medio ambiente pueden causar la opacidad de la córnea. Dicha opacidad ocasiona un grado variable de pérdida visual .

Causas comunes:

• Deficiencia de vitamina A (en países subdesarrollados es una causa importante de ceguera)
• Síndrome de Sjogren
• Queratoconjuntivitis herpética (una forma de conjuntivitis causada por el herpes simple )
• Quemaduras de la córnea por sustancias alcalinas u otros productos químicos
• Tracoma (una infección común en algunas regiones de Asia y el norte de África)
• Ceguera de los ríos (oncocercosis, una infección común en ciertas regiones de África)
• Algunas enfermedades hereditarias poco frecuentes relacionadas con trastornos metabólicos
