Definición:

Consiste en el uso de ondas sonoras de alta frecuencia para crear imágenes de órganos y sistemas dentro del cuerpo.

Forma en que se realiza el examen:

El ecógrafo crea imágenes que permiten examinar varios órganos en el cuerpo. Esta máquina envía ondas sonoras de alta frecuencia que hacen eco en las estructuras corporales. Una computadora recibe dichas ondas reflejadas y las utiliza para crear una imagen. A diferencia de las radiografías o la tomografía computarizada, no se presenta ninguna exposición a la radiación ionizante con este examen.

El examen se realiza en la sala de ecografías o de radiología. Usted se acostará para realizarle el procedimiento. Se le aplica un gel conductor claro a base de agua en el área del cuerpo que se va a evaluar para facilitar la transmisión de las ondas sonoras. Una sonda manual llamada transductor se desplaza sobre el área de estudio. A usted se le puede solicitar que cambie de posición, de manera que se puedan examinar otras áreas.
