Análisis del LCR

Definición:

Es un grupo de pruebas de laboratorio para medir las proteínas, el azúcar (glucosa) y otros químicos en el líquido que rodea y protege el cerebro y la médula espinal.

Forma en que se realiza el examen:

Se necesita una muestra del LCR. Una punción lumbar, también llamada punción raquídea, es la forma más común de recolectar esta muestra. Para obtener información sobre este procedimiento, ver el artículo sobre punción lumbar. Pocas veces se utilizan otros métodos para obtener la muestra del LCR, pero se pueden recomendar en algunos casos. Ver también:

Después de tomar la muestra, se envía a un laboratorio para su evaluación.

El análisis del LCR puede ayudar a detectar ciertas afecciones o enfermedades. Todo lo que aparece a continuación se puede medir, aunque no siempre se hace, en una muestra de líquido cefalorraquídeo:

Anticuerpos y ADN de virus comunes
Bacterias (incluyendo la que causa la sífilis, ver examen de VDRL)
Conteo de células
Cloruro
Antígeno criptocócico
Glucosa
Glutamina
Deshidrogenasa láctica
Bandas oligoclonales para buscar proteínas específicas
Proteína total
Si hay o no células cancerosas presentes
