Este examen involucra baja exposición a la radiación. Las radiografías se monitorean y se regulan para generar la cantidad mínima de exposición a la radiación necesaria para producir la imagen. La mayoría de los expertos piensan que el riesgo es bajo en comparación con los beneficios.

Las mujeres embarazadas y los niños son más sensibles a los riesgos que genera la exposición a los rayos X, razón por la cual se debe utilizar una placa protectora sobre las áreas que no se están rastreando.
