Riesgos:

No existen riesgos significativos asociados con el chequeo de la presión arterial.

Si usted tiene un acceso vascular (derivación) para diálisis renal en el brazo, no debe hacerse tomar la presión arterial en ese brazo.

Consideraciones:

Las mediciones repetitivas de la presión arterial son importantes. Una sola medición alta no significa necesariamente que usted padezca de hipertensión y una sola medición normal no significa necesariamente que no la padezca.

Las lecturas de la presión arterial tomadas en el hogar pueden brindarle información importante al médico. Estas lecturas pueden ser una mejor medida de la presión arterial corriente que las tomadas en el consultorio médico, en tanto usted se asegure de que la máquina sea precisa. Usted le puede solicitar al médico que compare las lecturas en el consultorio. Muchas personas se ponen nerviosas en los consultorios y arrojan lecturas más altas que las que normalmente obtendrían en el hogar. Esto se denomina hipertensión de la bata blanca.

Consulte con el médico si las medidas de la presión arterial son constantemente altas o bajas o si tiene síntomas al mismo tiempo que las lecturas de la presión arterial están altas o bajas.
