Normalmente, la cavidad pleural contiene sólo una cantidad muy pequeña de líquido.

Significado de los resultados anormales:

El análisis del líquido indica las posibles causas de derrame pleural, como infección, cáncer, insuficiencia cardíaca, cirrosis y enfermedad renal. Si hay sospecha de infección, se realiza un cultivo del líquido para determinar la presencia de microorganismos e identificarlos si se encuentran.
