Valores normales:

Los movimientos rápidos de los ojos de un lado a otro deben ocurrir cuando se instila agua tibia o fría en el oído y deben ser similares en ambos lados.

Significado de los resultados anormales:

Los resultados anormales quieren decir que puede haber un daño del nervio en el oído interno, el que controla el equilibrio. Si no se presentan los movimientos rápidos de los ojos de un lado para otro, incluso después de instilar agua helada, probablemente ha ocurrido un daño permanente en el nervio.

Los resultados anormales pueden sugerir la presencia de:

  • Trastornos congénitos (presentes al nacer)
  • Traumatismos
  • Rubéola
  • Trastornos vasculares con hemorragia (sangrado)
  • Coágulos
  • Ateroesclerosis del suministro sanguíneo del oído
  • Colesteatoma y otros tumores del oído
  • Ciertos tipos de intoxicaciones
  • Daño a los nervios del oído debido a ciertos antibióticos, medicamentos antipalúdicos, diuréticos y salicilatos.
