Cuáles son los riesgos:

La presión excesiva del agua puede lesionar un tímpano previamente dañado, pero esto ocurre con poca frecuencia debido a que la cantidad de agua que se va a utilizar se mide con anterioridad. La estimulación calórica no debe realizarse si el tímpano se encuentra perforado, porque se corre el riesgo de causar infección de oído; y tampoco debe realizarse durante un episodio agudo de vértigo, ya que se pueden empeorar los síntomas.

Consideraciones especiales:

La estimulación calórica tiene aproximadamente un 80% de precisión para diferenciar el daño del nervio como una causa de vértigo. Pueden ser necesarios otros exámenes para confirmar el diagnóstico.
