Los rangos de los valores normales pueden variar ligeramente entre diferentes laboratorios.

En general, se presenta un aumento del riesgo de cardiopatía, incluyendo ataque cardíaco, cuando los niveles de HDL son inferiores a 40 mg/dL. Para ser más específicos, los hombres presentan un riesgo particular si su nivel de HDL está por debajo de 37 mg/dL y en las mujeres si está por debajo de 47mg/dL.

Un nivel de HDL de 60 mg/dL o superior ayuda a proteger contra la cardiopatía.

Las mujeres tienden a tener colesterol HDL más alto que los hombres.
