El examen de HDL por lo general se realiza como parte de un lipidograma general, donde también se medirán el colesterol "malo" (LDL) y los triglicéridos. La información combinada reunida de todos estos exámenes puede ayudar a determinar el riesgo de padecer un ataque cardíaco, un accidente cerebrovascular y una enfermedad vascular periférica.

Si se encuentra que el riesgo es alto, el médico prescribe la terapia apropiada. El ejercicio regular puede incrementar los niveles de HDL en varios puntos.
