Debido a que la LDH se puede encontrar en muchos tejidos del organismo, la LDH total no es específica para la cardiopatía.

Normalmente, el nivel de LDH-2 es mayor que el de LDH-1; sin embargo, después de un ataque cardíaco, el nivel de LDH-1 es generalmente mayor que el de LDH-2, lo que se denomina patrón de LDH "descontrolado".

El nivel de LDH aumenta entre las 24 y 72 horas siguientes al ataque cardíaco, alcanza su pico máximo en 3 ó 4 días y se normaliza en más o menos 14 días.
