En algunos trastornos malignos (con mayor frecuencia el mieloma múltiple y la leucemia linfocítica crónica), un solo clon de linfocitos produce un tipo de proteína, inmunoglobulina monoclonal. Ésta se identifica como monoclonal (todas del mismo tipo) por medio de la inmunoelectroforesis. Algunas personas tienen inmunoglobulinas monoclonales, pero no tienen un trastorno maligno.
