Los riesgos de la punción lumbar son, entre otros:

  • Reacción alérgica al anestésico
  • Malestar durante el examen
  • Dolor de cabeza después del examen
  • Sangrado dentro del conducto raquídeo
  • Infección

Se puede presentar una hernia cerebral si se lleva a cabo una punción lumbar en una persona con una masa en el cerebro (como un tumor o un absceso), lo cual puede ocasionar daño cerebral o muerte. La punción lumbar no se realiza si un examen u otras pruebas muestran signos de un tumor o un absceso.

Algunas personas experimentan entumecimiento u hormigueo temporal en las piernas debido a la irritación de una raíz nerviosa por parte de la aguja.
