Valores normales:

El resultado es normalmente menor de 10 microgramos por mililitro (mcg/ml).

Desprendimiento prematuro de placenta.
Quemaduras.
Cardiopatía congénita.
Coagulación intravascular diseminada (CID).
Hipoxia.
Infecciones.
Muerte fetal intrauterina.
Leucemia.
Enfermedad hepática (ver: cirrosis).
Derivación portocava.
Preeclampsia.
Transfusión de sangre reciente.
Cirugía reciente que involucró una bomba de derivación cardiopulmonar.
Enfermedad renal (ver: insuficiencia renal).
Septicemia.
Estados tromboembólicos.
Rechazo al trasplante.
Reacción a transfusión.
