Cultivo de esputo

Definición:

Es un examen de las secreciones provenientes de los pulmones y los bronquios (conductos que llevan el aire al pulmón) para buscar bacterias que causan infección.

Forma en que se realiza el examen:

Usted tose profundamente y escupe cualquier esputo dentro de un recipiente estéril. El esputo se lleva luego al laboratorio. Allí, se coloca en una sustancia especial (medio) bajo condiciones que permitan la proliferación de bacterias u hongos.

Preparación para el examen:

El hecho de tomar mucha agua y otros líquidos la noche anterior al examen puede ayudar a la obtención de la muestra.

Lo que se siente durante el examen:

Es necesario que usted tosa. A veces, el médico le dará golpecitos en el pecho para aflojar el esputo profundo. Puede haber un vapor de agua que se inhala y le ayuda a expectorar la muestra.

Razones por las que se realiza el examen:

El cultivo se realiza en el esputo para ayudar a identificar las bacterias que están causando una infección en los pulmones o vías respiratorias.
