Los resultados positivos generalmente significan que los microorganismos infecciosos están presentes en el torrente sanguíneo. Algunas veces, se trata simplemente de una bacteria contaminante, no una verdadera infección, de ahí que se den resultados falsos positivos. El médico debe poder ayudar a la persona a determinar si se trata de una infección verdadera o un contaminante.
