Un resultado normal significa que no hubo proliferación de ninguna bacteria, virus u hongo en la caja de Petri. Esto se denomina resultado negativo.
Si hay bacterias presentes, usted puede tener meningitis bacteriana. Otras posibles causas abarcan tuberculosis e infecciones micóticas. Algunas bacterias o virus también se pueden detectar usando exámenes especiales.
El hecho de encontrar bacterias no necesariamente significa que la infección sea contagiosa, a menos que se trate de meningitis meningocócica.
