Cuáles son los riesgos:

El procedimiento en general es seguro, pero los riesgos pueden comprender:

  • Reacción alérgica al colorante (medio de contraste)
  • Daño a la arteria o a la pared arterial que puede llevar a la formación de coágulos de sangre

Hay una exposición baja a la radiación. Sin embargo, los expertos en su mayoría consideran que el riesgo relacionado con la mayoría de los rayos X es menor a otros riesgos que enfrentamos diariamente, como conducir autos. Las mujeres embarazadas y los niños son más sensibles a los riesgos relacionados con dichos rayos X.

Consideraciones especiales:

El examen NO debe practicarse si la persona está embarazada o tiene tendencia al sangrado.

Se puede realizar una angiografía por resonancia magnética (ARM) en aquellos pacientes a quienes no se les pueda practicar una arteriografía renal. La ARM no es invasiva y puede suministrar imágenes similares de las arterias renales.
