El tipo de contraste más común que se inyecta en la vena contiene yodo. Si a una persona con alergia a este elemento se le administra este tipo de medio de contraste, se pueden presentar ronchas, picazón, náuseas, dificultad respiratoria u otros síntomas.

Si usted padece diabetes o está con diálisis para el riñón, hable con el médico antes del examen acerca de sus riesgos.

Los rayos X y la tomografía computarizada se vigilan y controlan estrictamente para garantizar que se utilice la menor cantidad de radiación. Las tomografías computarizadas en verdad crean niveles bajos de radiación ionizante, la cual tiene el potencial de causar cáncer y otros defectos. Sin embargo, el riesgo asociado con cualquier gammagrafía individual es pequeño, pero se incrementa a media que se llevan a cabo numerosos estudios adicionales.

En algunos casos, una tomografía computarizada aún se puede efectuar si los beneficios superan con creces a los riesgos. Por ejemplo, puede ser más riesgoso no practicar el examen, especialmente si el médico piensa que usted podría tener cáncer.
