Las pruebas de esfuerzo generalmente son seguras. Algunos pacientes pueden presentar dolor torácico o se pueden desmayar o desvanecerse. Un ataque cardíaco o un ritmo cardíaco irregular y peligroso es raro.
Generalmente, las personas que son propensas a tener tales complicaciones de antemano se sabe que tienen un corazón débil, así que no se les hace este examen.
Las pruebas de esfuerzo sólo con ejercicio pueden ser difíciles de interpretar en ciertos pacientes. En esos pacientes, se puede agregar algún tipo de examen imagenológico (ecocardiografía o gammagrafía) u otro examen.
