La presencia de la sonda en el esófago puede ocasionar aumento en la salivación, lo cual incrementa el riesgo de aspiración. Esto puede llevar a que se presente lesión pulmonar o neumonía por aspiración.

En general, las personas que presentan dificultad para deglutir corren mayor riesgo de sufrir una aspiración.
