El riesgo más serio es un sangrado interno e igualmente existe la posibilidad de un colapso pulmonar y de lesión de la vesícula biliar o del riñón. En caso de recibir sedantes para este examen, también se pueden presentar complicaciones a causa de dicha sedación.
