Definición:

La hiperglucemia es un nivel anormalmente alto de azúcar en la sangre. Este artículo aborda la hiperglucemia en bebés.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

El cuerpo de un bebé sano generalmente tiene un control muy cuidadoso de los niveles de glucemia. La insulina es la principal hormona en el cuerpo que regula la glucosa. Los bebés enfermos pueden tener cantidades bajas y un funcionamiento insuficiente de la insulina, lo cual ocasiona un control deficiente de la glucemia.

Puede haber causas específicas de la ineficiencia o de los bajos niveles de insulina, tales como infección, problemas hepáticos, problemas hormonales y algunos medicamentos. En raras ocasiones, los bebés pueden realmente tener diabetes, con niveles bajos de insulina que provocan niveles altos de glucemia.

Síntomas:

Con frecuencia, los bebés con hiperglucemia no presentan síntomas.

Algunas veces, los bebés con niveles altos de glucemia producen cantidades considerables de orina y se deshidratan. La glucemia alta puede ser una señal de que el bebé tiene estrés adicional en su cuerpo, debido a problemas como infección o insuficiencia cardíaca.

Signos y exámenes:

Un examen de sangre para verificar los niveles de glucosa (glucemia) se puede hacer a la cabecera del paciente o en un laboratorio.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

Generalmente, no hay efectos a largo plazo a raíz de los niveles altos de glucemia, a menos que el bebé tenga diabetes.
