Con la colonoscopia virtual, se puede visualizar el colon desde muchos ángulos diferentes, lo cual no es fácil con la colonoscopia convencional.
En la colonoscopia virtual, no se utilizan sedantes y los pacientes por lo general pueden reanudar sus actividades normales inmediatamente después del examen. La colonoscopia convencional implica el uso de sedantes y por lo regular la pérdida de un día de trabajo.

La colonoscopia virtual es una de las herramientas de detección sistemática para cáncer de colon recomendadas por la Sociedad Estadounidense para el Cáncer (American Cancer Society).
