Expectativas después de la cirugía:

Después de la cirugía, la persona necesita permanecer en el hospital hasta por cuatro días. El médico puede recomendar fisioterapia para mejorar el movimiento del tobillo. Para evitar la inflamación, el pie se puede mantener levantado por encima del nivel del corazón al dormir o descansar.

Convalecencia:

La recuperación puede tomar de 2 a 3 meses. El paciente no debe apoyarse en ese pie durante algunas semanas y debe usar un caminador o muletas. Igualmente, se deben evitar las actividades de alto impacto, como los aeróbicos en escalones, mientras dura la recuperación de la cirugía de reemplazo de tobillo.

Un reemplazo de tobillo exitoso eliminará el dolor y permitirá el movimiento del tobillo hacia arriba y hacia abajo. En general, los reemplazos totales de tobillo duran de 10 a 15 años, dependiendo del nivel de actividad y de la salud general del paciente.

Se recomienda entonces discutir con el médico los riesgos y beneficios de este procedimiento.
