Consideraciones:

Los exámenes del recién nacido son vitales para que el bebé reciba el tratamiento que le puede salvar la vida. Sin embargo, no todos los trastornos que se pueden descubrir por medio de pruebas de detección se pueden tratar.

Aunque los estados (en los Estados Unidos) no realizan todas las pruebas de detección, los padres pueden hacer que se lleven a cabo pruebas adicionales por parte de laboratorios calificados en centros médicos grandes. Los laboratorios privados también ofrecen pruebas de detección para recién nacidos. Asimismo, los padres pueden averiguar acerca de pruebas de detección adicionales para recién nacidos con su médico o el hospital donde el bebé va a nacer, al igual que a través de organizaciones como March of Dimes.
