Carcinoma paratiroideo

Síntomas:

Los síntomas de cáncer de paratiroides son causados principalmente por niveles altos de calcio en la sangre (hipercalciemia) y pueden afectar diversas partes del cuerpo. Estos síntomas abarcan:

Dolor óseo
Estreñimiento
Fatiga
Fracturas
Sed frecuente
Micción frecuente
Cálculos renales
Debilidad muscular
Náuseas
Inapetencia
Vómitos

Es importante anotar que sólo aproximadamente 1 de cada 200 personas con hiperparatiroidismo primario tiene cáncer de paratiroides.

Signos y exámenes:

El cáncer de paratiroides es extremadamente difícil de diagnosticar.

El médico llevará a cabo un examen físico y le hará preguntas acerca de la historia clínica.

En alrededor de la mitad de todos los casos, la palpación del cuello con las manos puede revelar la presencia de un tumor paratiroideo canceroso.

Los tumores paratiroideos cancerosos tienden a producir cantidades muy altas de hormona paratiroidea (PTH). Los exámenes pueden abarcar:

Calcio en la sangre (los niveles superiores a 14 mg/dL son sospechosos)
PTH en la sangre (los niveles que sean más del doble de lo normal pueden indicar presencia de cáncer)

Antes de la cirugía, usted se someterá a una gammagrafía radiactiva especial, denominada gammagrafía con sestamibi, de las glándulas paratiroides. Igualmente, le pueden practicar una ecografía del cuello. Estos exámenes se hacen para confirmar cuál glándula paratiroide está anormal.
