El médico llevará a cabo un examen y hará preguntas acerca de la historia clínica. Le preguntarán si fuma y, de ser así, por cuánto tiempo lo ha hecho.

Al escuchar el tórax con un estetoscopio, el médico algunas veces puede oír un líquido alrededor de los pulmones, que podría sugerir, aunque no siempre, la presencia de cáncer.

Los exámenes que se pueden llevar a cabo comprenden:

  • Radiografía del tórax
  • Examen citológico del esputo para buscar células cancerosas
  • Análisis de sangre
  • Tomografía computarizada del tórax
  • Resonancia magnética del tórax
  • Tomografía por emisión de positrones (TEP)
