Mixoma auricular - Overview

Definición:

Es un tumor no canceroso que se presenta en el lado superior izquierdo o derecho del corazón y que crece en la pared (tabique interauricular) que separa los dos lados de dicho órgano.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

Un mixoma es un tumor cardíaco primario, lo cual significa que comienza dentro del corazón. La mayoría de los tumores del corazón se inician en alguna otra parte.

Los tumores cardíacos primarios son poco comunes y los mixomas son el tipo más común de estos raros tumores. Alrededor del 75% de los mixomas ocurren en la aurícula izquierda del corazón, generalmente comenzando en la pared que divide las dos cámaras superiores del corazón, y el resto se dan en la aurícula derecha. Los mixomas auriculares derechos algunas veces están asociados con estenosis tricúspide y fibrilación auricular .

Los mixomas son más comunes en las mujeres y alrededor del 10% de ellos se dan en familias (hereditarios), por lo que se denominan mixomas familiares. Estos tumores tienden a ocurrir en más de una parte del corazón a la vez y, con frecuencia, causan síntomas a una edad más temprana que los otros mixomas.
