Se pueden administrar antibióticos profilácticos a mujeres embarazadas que tengan corioamnionitis, estreptococos del grupo B o que antes hayan dado a luz a un bebé con sepsis debido a las bacterias.
El hecho de prevenir y tratar infecciones en las madres, brindando un ambiente limpio al nacer, y dar a luz al bebé dentro de las 24 horas siguientes a la ruptura de la bolsa de las aguas, cuando sea posible, puede ayudar a disminuir la probabilidad de que se presente sepsis neonatal.
