Tratamiento:

A los bebés que estén en el hospital y a los que tengan menos de cuatro semanas de nacidos se les empiezan a suministrar antibióticos antes de que lleguen los resultados del laboratorio, los cuales pueden tardar de 24-72 horas. Esta práctica ha salvado muchas vidas.

Es posible que a los bebés mayores no se les suministren antibióticos si todos los resultados del laboratorio están dentro de los límites normales. En lugar de esto, al niño se le puede hacer un seguimiento minucioso de manera ambulatoria.

Los bebés que en realidad requieran tratamiento serán hospitalizados para realizarles el monitoreo.

Pronóstico:

Con el tratamiento oportuno, muchos bebés con estas infecciones bacterianas se recuperarán por completo sin problemas perdurables. No obstante, la sepsis neonatal es una causa principal de muerte infantil y cuanto más rápidamente un bebé reciba el tratamiento, mejor será el desenlace clínico.
