Síntomas:

Si el defecto es pequeño, puede no causar ningún síntoma. Sin embargo, la mayoría de los defectos son grandes.

Los síntomas pueden abarcar:

  • Retraso en el crecimiento
  • Insuficiencia cardíaca
  • Irritabilidad
  • Alimentación deficiente y falta de aumento de peso
  • Respiración rápida
  • Latidos cardíacos rápidos
  • Infecciones respiratorias

Signos y exámenes:

El pediatra normalmente escuchará un sonido cardíaco anormal (soplo) al auscultar el corazón del niño con un estetoscopio.

El médico puede ordenar exámenes tales como:

  • Cateterismo cardíaco (un tubo delgado insertado en las arterias alrededor del corazón para visualizar dicho órgano y los vasos sanguíneos y medir directamente la presión en el corazón y los pulmones)
  • Radiografía de tórax
  • Ecocardiografía
  • Resonancia magnética del corazón
