Hay tres vistas del cuerpo (anterior, posterior y lateral) que pueden ser útiles para identificar un área del cuerpo. Muchas áreas tienen un nombre descriptivo y otro técnico. Por ejemplo, la parte posterior de la rodilla es llamada la fosa poplítea. Sin embargo, es posible que algunas áreas como el "flanco" no tengan los dos nombres, por lo que su ubicación puede no ser del todo clara.
