La cistinuria es un trastorno que se caracteriza por la presencia de cálculos de cistina en los riñones, la uretra y la vejiga. El transporte anormal de aminoácidos en el riñón es la consecuencia de una anomalía genética y los altos niveles del aminoácido cistina en la orina producen la formación de cálculos. A pesar de que esta enfermedad sólo es responsable del 1 al 2% de cálculos en el tracto urinario de la población en general, es la causa más común entre los niños.
