El enfisema es una enfermedad pulmonar en que se produce daño a los alveolos o sacos de aire. Hay una destrucción progresiva de los alveolos y el tejido circundante que los sujeta. En la enfermedad más avanzada, se presentan grandes quistes de aire donde antes se hallaba tejido pulmonar normal. El aire queda atrapado en los pulmones debido a la falta de tejido de apoyo, lo cual disminuye la oxigenación.
