Muchas enfermedades de transmisión sexual (ETS) invaden el huésped y residen en él por largos períodos de tiempo sin matarlo. La sífilis es un buen ejemplo, la cual puede permanecer en su huésped de 30 a 50 años. El VIH también puede tomar 10 años o más para matar a su huésped, permitiendo así que la infección se propague durante mucho tiempo.
