< Atras La acumulación de placa en la arteria carótida interna puede producir estrechez e irregularidad del lumen o luz de la arteria, lo que impide el adecuado flujo de sangre al cerebro. Es más frecuente que a medida que la estrechez se acrecienta, se puedan desprender pedazos de placa de la carótida interna, llegar hasta el cerebro y obstruir vasos sanguíneos que intervienen en la circulación cerebral. En consecuencia, se produce una embolia, con posible parálisis u otros trastornos.
