La pericarditis post-IM es una inflamación del pericardio (saco serofibroso que rodea el corazón). Cualquier lesión previa al músculo cardíaco puede causar pericarditis. La incidencia de pericarditis está asociada con el síndrome de Dressler; puede producirse después de un infarto, de una cirugía de corazón abierto o puede aparecer por heridas al corazón con arma blanca o trauma torácico. Cuando el pericardio inflamado roza el corazón se produce dolor .
