La neuropatía periférica no es una enfermedad en particular, sino la manifestación de muchas condiciones que deterioran los nervios periféricos (tejido nervioso diferente al cerebro y la médula espinal). Los síntomas dependen de si los nervios sensoriales (los nervios que transmiten la información sensorial del cuerpo al cerebro y a la médula espinal) o los nervios motores (los nervios que transmiten los impulsos desde el cerebro y la médula espinal al cuerpo) resultan afectados. Si los nervios sensoriales resultan dañados, puede haber disminución, desaparición o anomalías de la sensación. El deterioro de los nervios motores impide el movimiento o la función. La neuropatía periférica puede ser causada por lesiones directas o indirectas o por una causa sistémica, tal como un trastorno metabólico.
