La coartación de la aorta es un defecto congénito en el cual la aorta, la arteria principal del corazón, se estrecha. El estrechamiento produce presión sanguínea alta antes del punto de coartación y presión sanguínea baja más allá del punto de coartación. Comúnmente, la coartación se localiza de forma que se produce hipertensión en la parte superior y extremidades superiores del cuerpo e hipotensión en la parte inferior y extremidades inferiores del cuerpo. Los síntomas pueden ser, entre otros, hipertensión localizada, pies o piernas frías, rendimiento disminuido durante el ejercicio e insuficiencia cardíaca.
