La escarlatina es una enfermedad producida por una infección por bacterias estreptocócicas betahemolíticas del grupo A que se presenta en un pequeño porcentaje de personas con infección de garganta por estreptococos. La infección se inicia típicamente con fiebre e infección de garganta producida por estreptococos. Puede estar acompañada de escalofríos, vómitos, dolor abdominal y malestar general. Las bacterias estreptocócicas producen una toxina que causa erupción, la cual aparece uno o dos días después de iniciarse la enfermedad. Al comienzo, la erupción aparece en el cuello y en el pecho, pero posteriormente se esparce por todo el cuerpo. Mientras que la erupción permanece roja, el paciente puede desarrollar líneas de Pastia, una coloración roja brillante de los pliegues bajo los brazos y en la ingle.
