Aunque el cráneo es duro, elástico y provee excelente protección al cerebro, un impacto o golpe severo puede producir fractura de cráneo, la cual puede ir acompañada por una lesión cerebral. Algunos de los diferentes tipos de fractura de cráneo son, entre otras:

Simple: rotura en el hueso sin dañar la piel.
Lineal o del contorno del cuero cabelludo: rotura en un hueso craneal que se asemeja a una línea delgada sin esquirlas, depresiones o distorsión del hueso.
Deprimida: rotura en un hueso craneal (o porción "aplastada" del cráneo) con depresión del hueso hacia el cerebro.
Compuesta: rotura con pérdida de la piel y esquirlas del hueso. Se puede presentar conjuntamente con la fractura una lesión cerebral, tal como un hematoma subdural (sangrado).
