La espina bífida es un defecto congénito (defecto de nacimiento) en el cual el canal espinal no se cierra antes del nacimiento. En casos severos, esto puede ocasionar una protuberancia en la médula espinal y las membranas que la recubren en un bebé afectado. Esta condición algunas veces no reviste importancia, o puede ser corregida con la cirugía.
