El intestino grueso es la porción del sistema digestivo con mayor responsabilidad en la absorción de agua de los residuos alimenticios no digeribles. La válvula ileocecal del íleon (intestino delgado) pasa el material al intestino grueso por el ciego. El material pasa a través de las porciones ascendentes, descendentes y transversas y sigmoide del colon y finalmente al recto. Desde éste los desechos se expulsan del organismo.
