Los nervios vagos parten del cerebro, a ambos lados de la cabeza, y descienden por el cuello a lo largo del esófago, hacia el tracto intestinal. Son los nervios más largos del organismo y afectan la deglución y el habla. También se conectan a las partes del cerebro involucradas con las convulsiones. En muchos trastornos convulsivos la estimulación eléctrica de los nervios vagos puede aliviar los síntomas.
