La biopsia de ganglio centinela es una técnica que ayuda a determinar si el cáncer se ha diseminado (metástasis) o está limitado localmente. Cuando se detecta un cáncer el siguiente paso suele ser hallar el ganglio linfático más cercano al sitio del tumor y extraerlo para su análisis. El concepto de ganglio “centinela” o el primer ganglio que drena el área cancerosa permite una clasificación más exacta del cáncer y deja los ganglios no afectados para que continúen con la importante función del drenaje de líquidos. El procedimiento consiste en inyectar un medio de contraste (algunas veces medianamente radioactivo) para señalar el ganglio linfático que se encuentra más cercano al sitio del cáncer. La biopsia de ganglio centinela se usa para clasificar muchas clases de cáncer, incluidos los de pulmón y piel (melanoma).
